    Good natured
    Lover of music
    Master storyteller
The one who would rather look good sword fighting instead of laying a hit

Reading to him his favorite type a book; nonfiction nature
    Happy Sixth Birthday
    I love you Roger

We brought him home from the hospital on Christmas Eve and I fell asleep on the couch holding him with “It’s a Wonderful Life” playing in the background. Six years? It was only yesterday.

    Blizzard Weekend Wrap Up
I was shoveling my driveway yesterday and Maureen came out after seeing that the kids were happy sledding down the little incline in the back yard.

Maureen: “I’ll clean off the cars”
Roger: “Isn’t it interesting that we only have one shovel? Convenient.”
Maureen: “Didn’t ‘somebody’ break a shovel last year?”
Roger: “Didn’t ‘somebody’ leave a shovel out overnight so it got stolen?”
    Maureen: “oh…ummm…OK. I guess we’re even.”
Roger: “How are we even when I’m still the only one…”
    Maureen: “La La La Even!”

There is an incline in my back yard up to the stone wall. It isn’t steep but it is great for sledding. Katie likes to start the sled and jump on it as it is moving. Roger v5.11 tried to be the Silver Surfer and it didn’t end well. They make it hard to do anything because they scream every five minutes but no one is ever hurt…much…it usually is because Katie veered her sled into the boy’s or she decided to hop on his sled mid flight. It got to the point where we were just yelling over the house. I can only imagine what my neighbors think. “MOM! Katie is on my back!” “KATIE GET OFF YOUR BROTHER!” “WOGER GRABBED ME!” “STOP TOUCHING EACH OTHER!”

Maureen went out shopping and so I gave Roger one of his birthday presents…a viewing of The Empire Strikes Back. It’s funny; his understanding of Star Wars is rooted in the cartoon clone wars and it kind of conflicts with what he is watching. So Luke is on Degobah and Roger says “He’s looking for Yoda and he doesn’t realize that’s him.” Then when Luke says he is looking for a Jedi Master and Yoda says “Yoda…you seek Yoda,” Roger got frustrated “Why doesn’t he know he is Yoda? Why doesn’t he tell him?” As for the other big reveal he was totally unfazed. “I…am your father.” “He’s lying. He made it up.” I didn’t set him straight; I’ll let Return of the Jedi do that. So when the movie was done he said he like it. He didn’t like when Luke got his hand cut off but he has a robot hand now so it’s OK. I also noticed that he covered his face whenever there was kissing on screen so I’m sure he could do with less of that. There is a lot there for a six year old and many years to get more out of it.

On Saturday we had guests over for a Christmas party. The snow stayed away in our neck of the woods and a good time was had by all. We lost about a third of our expected guests to the threat of snow so we just adjusted our menu down in size. I still had a ton of leftover though. I kind of thought that people would filter through the house and it may have happened if more people were there but everyone just hung out upstairs. It was very social and comfortable. It’s a great space to entertain. We had rock band set up and that worked well as a party activity. Despite the work that went into it on our end Maureen and I were very happy and we would totally do it again. We just need to find ways to cut down on costs. It’s funny; we tell each other we can only spend “X” amount then we go overboard. We just want to do everything and we didn’t need to.

Next up is the family Christmas Eve party. That should see the other level of the house used. Then there is some tentative thought of having a New Years Eve party at our place. That may actually be a small affair because I find that most people I know already have plans for that night and it is just Maureen and I and Amy and Rich without anything to do and no desire for anything extravagant. Board games and Wii until 2010 may be on the menu that night. I have a week to figure it out.

    Aluminum Chef - Fall Edition
Aluminum Chef Pictures and Desciptions )We skipped a couple months on the food challenge this fall, so I'm just calling this one the Fall edition. This Aluminum Chef saw an additional Adult and a few additional kids in the junior division. It was also the first one that was held at my parents house during one of our family gatherings (and when my brother John was home visiting. So it received a great many more judges as well as a bunch of attention for the contestants. (and my family had more sweets than double the 20-30 of us present could ever have eaten).

Overall it was a fantastic showing from everybody.  We haven't scheduled the next competition as we have to see how schedules allow, but the ingredients for the adults will be Fresh Garlic, Cottage Cheese and Salsa.  I've never really eaten Cottage Cheese before so I don't know what I"m going to do with this one.  I tried it in preparation for some ideas, and its essentially pretty vile.  Currently I'm wondering if it can be made into a cheese sauce of some sort with the judicious application of heat and butter?

Thanks to everybody that came out as judges or contestants.  I"m really excited to have been able to share this with my family as well.

This seemed like it would be a pretty easy challenge until we tried to think of ways to use brownies and pudding together and differently from each other.  Then it became kind of a "what were we thinking?" The added pressure of doing it for a crowd for the first time and needing to make enough to feed a bunch of people was tricky.  In the end I held up the whole group by a good hour in trying to get my dish ready.   This time also saw the addition of my sister Michelle, who heard the challenge and decided that she had to get in on it for this one.  In the Junior Division, we added James, our youngest competitor at 5 years old, and Dylan, my sister Michelle's 12 year old.   Without any further Ado, I give you the Adult Entries:

    Here is my Dish

Make with the clicky for pictures and description )Total:  239

    Secret Ingredients:  Brownie, Pudding, Crackers

These are Deep Fried Chocolate Ginger Brownie dough balls with a frozen vanilla pudding core and graham cracker coating, sprinkled with powered sugar and topped with vanilla pudding.

This was what I nearly burned my house down for.  In my experiments it was really difficult to get the pudding inside the brownies before deep frying, so in the end I made little balls of pudding and froze them and then inserted them into the half baked brownie batter, made it into balls and coated it in the graham cracker goodness and deep fried it.  I added a powdered sugar and topped it off with a dollop of vanilla pudding.   I think it tasted like a filled munchkin and loved it, but my use of ginger really turned my family off.  (Philistines :-) )

This one earned the lowest grade, but everybody was very impressed at the work that went into it.  Personally I was extremely pleased with the result, though I should have played to my audience better.

    Next up was Jess' entry:

    Total:  253

    Secret Ingredients:  Brownie, Pudding, Crackers

These are Raspberry Brownie Desert Cups with a Vanilla Pudding filling, whipped cream and animal cracker dusting on top.

These were a great idea, and Jess went through several incarnations before she found a way to make the vehicle work.  The raspberry flavor really came through in the chocolate and set it apart from your standard brownie fare.  I'm pretty sure she doctored the pudding and whipped cream as well, but its been too long and I can't remember now.

Next we have our newest contestant, my sister Michelle:

    Total:  241

    Secret Ingredients:  Brownie, Pudding, Crackers

This is Brownie Layer Cake with a Yellow Cake Base, a half baked brownie layer, and a layer of chocolate pudding, with chocolate dipped animal crackers decorating the top.

Its a shame we didn't get a picture of this one when it was still in cake form, because it was really well put together.  This is one of the servings though and it was a really tasty treat.  I'm sure she had a bear of a time trying to layer half baked brownie batter on top of yellow cake.

She made a pretty great showing on her first run out and we were really happy to have her with us.

And last but not least, my brother in law, John, who had the winning entry this time out.

    Total:  281

    Secret Ingredients:  Brownie, Pudding, Crackers

This is a Cheesecake Parfait, with layers of Cheesecake, and chocolate pudding with a shaved chocolate and a chocolate covered animal cracker layer with a blonde brownie surprise in the middle.

This might just be the best looking dish that has ever hit the Aluminum Chef Competition.  John always excels at presentation, but this one was tops.  Even better, it was delicious in its layers and I could have eaten it all day.  Where all of the other food we had was rather rich and filling, this one just floated into our pallets.

There was no doubt he was the winner of this competition.

On the Juniors Division, we had a number of entries and my descriptions for them will be short and sweet so that I can get this posted.   I don't honestly remember what the scores were, but I remember that Chris won and it was a pretty close race all around.  .

This is James, my 5 year old nephew's (John's son) entry:

Fall Aluminum Chef Junior Division. James ' Entry:

Secret Ingredients: Fruit, Yogurt and Chocolate

This is James' beach them with blueberry's and chocolate forming the ocean tide and a graham cracker beach strewn with candy litter.

    Next we have Wesley's entry:

Fall Aluminum Chef Junior Division. Wesley 's Entry:

Secret Ingredients: Fruit, Yogurt and Chocolate

This is a mixed fruit yogurt Dip with chocolate sauce.

Next we have Dylan, the other new contestant, and my sister Michelle's son.

    Fall Aluminum Chef Junior Division.

    Dylan 's Entry:

Secret Ingredients: Fruit, Yogurt and Chocolate

This is a Dylan's beach theme with Apple and chocolate graham cracker beach chairs sitting in the cocoa sand and being washed away in a yogurt tide.

    Next we have Chris' Entry:

Fall Aluminum Chef Junior Division. Chris' Entry: This was the winner this month

Secret Ingredients: Fruit, Yogurt and Chocolate

This is a fruit- yogurt pie with a chocolate candy personality.

    Next we have Tristan's Entry:

    Fall Aluminum Chef Junior Division.

    Tristan's Entry:

Secret Ingredients: Fruit, Yogurt and Chocolate

This is a fruit yogurt smoothy with animal cracker and chocolate chip blend.

    Tis the Season
I went to Chicopee looking for a used Nintendo DS. It is going to be Roger v5.11’s birthday gift.

Maureen: “Do we want to give him a DS? He’s getting a Wii for Christmas?”
Roger: “If his birthday was in the summer instead of three days before Christmas would that even be a question?”

Gamestop sells used DS for 80 bucks (which is a savings of fifty dollars). The only problem is that not every store has them and the quality is sketchy. Their website shows which stores have them in stock and I called ahead to the store in Manchester to verify stock and price. I spent my lunch on Friday driving over only to find that I should have asked what color they had because they only had pink and pink. That wouldn’t fly so the next store was Chicopee. They had a bunch of them but they were beat up. The DS has a touch screen so the stylus can and does scratch it up. But when it has a game in you can’t tell and it looks great. He is going to love this thing and he is going to be so happy. I can’t wait to give it to him.

The older these kids get the more I want to get them for Christmas and the stuff they want just gets more and more expensive. The dollar amount we spend on them has not changed but it doesn’t go as far. Quality over quantity. When I grew up my mom never gave me anything big because she was trying to flood me with presents. The first (and last) time Maureen went shopping with mom to help guide her spending she pointed out a book I wanted (It was the collected and annotated Dragonlance Chronicles). It was thirty dollars and mom blanched “If I get this it’s all he’ll get”. “Yes, but it’s what he wants.” I didn’t hear the end of it. Mom subscribes to Joseph Stalin’s line of thinking “Quantity has a quality all its own.” Feeling that I needed more to open on Christmas morning she picked up a computer game from the bargain bin at Comp USA. It was a DOS game that wouldn’t even load on my machine. I thanked her profusely. That’s the way she is.

Maureen and I always feel like we are not doing enough and in actuality I think we are doing too much. Despite what my mom got me I was always happy with what I got. I didn’t know any better. Then I would go to school and my friends would tell me about their computers and three rifles and expensive electronics and I got socks wrapped individually because it made Christmas morning last longer and it was funny. I mean I got stuff I liked as well but you get the idea. And I was happy. But still, here I am and we got the kids three expensive presents and we are looking for more. It’s a delicate balance.

This is just rambling. I’m lucky that the problem I have is giving my kids too much rather then being able to give them anything. I’m really lucky.

    Monday morning joke
It is near the Christmas break of the school year. The students have turned in all their work and there is really nothing more to do. All the children are restless and the teacher decides to have an early dismissal.

Teacher: "Whoever answers the questions I ask, first and correctly can leave early today."

Little Johnny says to himself "Good, I want to get outta here. I'm smart and I'll answer the question."

Teacher: "Who said 'Four Score and Seven Years Ago'?"

Before Johnny can open his mouth, Susie says, "Abraham Lincoln."

Teacher: "That's right Susie, you can go home."

Johnny is mad that Susie answered the question first.

Teacher: "Who said 'I Have a Dream'?"

Before Johnny can open his mouth, Mary says, "Martin Luther King."

Teacher: "That's right Mary, you can go."

Johnny is even madder than before.

Teacher: "Who said 'Ask not, what your country can do for you'?"

Before Johnny can open his mouth, Nancy says, "John F. Kennedy."

Teacher: "That's right Nancy , you may also leave."

Johnny is boiling mad that he has not been able to answer to any of the questions.

When the teacher turns her back Johnny says, "I wish these bitches would keep their mouths shut!"

The teacher turns around: "NOW WHO SAID THAT?"

Johnny: "TIGER WOODS. CAN I GO NOW?"

    Dinner at Zylo
Guys, I work at a really fantastic restaurant. What's more, I work for some really fantastic people. Paulie and I went in for dinner tonight and were given the VIP treatment, complete with two more courses than we ordered, and add-ons to the courses we did. We were visited by all the servers, of course, and my manager, Scott, and the pastry chef, Rachel. It was sooo nice, especially considering we were just going in for a nice little dinner. As much as I may not want to have a day job, I guess this one's not a bad one to have, after all :)
